“I don’t know where she could be Jakari. We’ve looked for her the last almost three years and nothing. Maybe it’s better if you come to grips with the fact something bad happened to her.” I heard a man say as I stood outside Jakari’s door. He told me to stop by and pick up some money.

He was throwing a party in remembrance of the bitch Jaele he was friends with. She’s been gone a long time and he’s still searching for her. I wish he let the bitch go already.

“I’m not gonna believe she disappeared and didn’t contact anyone; especially Kena or her mom. They were tight as hell.” He was really in denial about her disappearance.

“Exactly why she may be gone.” The other voice said.

“Until I see a body, Jaele is still out there.”

“A’ight. I’ll see you tonight.” The man spoke and I made it known that I’m there.

The guy stepping out the kitchen happened to be his uncle Big Ky. He hated me and my friend Sean. On his way out, he made sure to shoulder check me.

“Really Jakari?” He leaned on the wall laughing.

“What you want me to say?” I closed the door and put my things on the table.

“How about, uncle Ky don’t do my girl like that for starters or...” His hand went up.

“Did you not forget, you and your messy ass friend talk shit to his future daughter in law any chance you get? Or the fact you and Sean were overheard laughing about Kena losing the baby. Maybe it’s when you tried to jump her at the grocery store one day but Kyana showed up. Or...” He went on and on.

“Ok, I get it Jakari. All I’m saying is he don’t have to shoulder check me like that.” I wrapped my arms around his waist.

“I love you babe.” I said and looked up waiting for him to repeat me. We’ve been together for four years and to this very day, he has never said it to me.

“Yea ok. Yo ass want this money.” He took a knot out his pocket and peeled off twenty, 100 dollar bills.

“Get something nice but don’t be extra.” He placed the money in my hand and I stared at it to see if he were serious.

“This ain’t enough. My shoes alone cost this price.” I whined.

“Tonight, ain’t about you Na and stop acting as if you weren’t broke before me.” He moved my arms and stepped away. I despised when he reminded me of how broke I used to be.

Yes, I come from the projects but everyone don’t need to know that. Looking at me now, no one would ever assume different that’s why it bothers me when he says it. Like I can’t forget because he constantly brings it up.

“Really?”

“Really Na. Every time we have this party, you try and make it about you.” He said walking away and I followed.

“Maybe if you show me some attention I won’t have to.” He stopped and turned.

“What kinda attention you searching for Danaisha because I give you a lot.
